Aaron does some more magic tricks with his rod by making it bud, blossom and produce ripe almonds.  This was to serve as a warning to rebels so that no one would complain any more.

At this point, the people say they are doomed to die if they come close to the tabernacle.

Discussion Points.

Fear of being killed seems to be the motivation for the people of Israel in Numbers 17.  So far, we've seen killing for complaining, killing for working on the sabbath, lots and lots of animal killings for sacrifices … and absolutely no joy expressed by God's chosen people.
