A poll released by Gallop on Christmas Eve reveals that nearly 1 in 4 Americans believe that religion is outdated and that there is an increase in Americans claiming no religious identity (these people are commonly referred to as "nones").
According to Gallop, 78% of Americans identify with some form of Christian religion, which represents a decline. Gallops writes that the major reason for this decline has been an increase in the percentage of Americans claiming no religious identity. These "nones" are now at 13% of all adults.
Since its 60 years of tracking religious belief, Gallop has watched a continuous decline in religious affiliation:
In 1948, 91% of Americans identified with a Christian faith. Twenty years ago, in 1989, 82% of Americans identified as Christian. Ten years ago, it was 84%. This year, as noted, 78% of all American adults identify with a Christian faith.
