In Raleigh, the Triangle Freethought Society contributed an addition to the traditional manger scene: a billboard concerning the winter solstice. For the most part, citizens did not have a problem with the billboard, although they did not like the messenger (i.e., atheists), saying that atheists live only for themselves.
The winter solstice marks the shortest and darkest day of the year, which lands on December 21. Celebrations by ancient cultures around the world have traditionally surrounded the solstice.
