God Is Not Great How Religion Poisons Everything

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's recent bestseller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case
against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and
reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry
of the double helix.
1 Star Not Great …
The Only thing not great in this book is the author him self.. I think he needs some medications, but as the saying goes:
The Dogs Will Bark, But the Caravan Moves On !!
1 Star Delusional
The only conclusion you can come to reading this book is that its totally irrational.
Random examples and lots of nasty words do NOT make a rational case.
A critic of religion who fails to accept anything good about it – anything at all – is just not living in the real world.
5 Stars Takes no prisoners
True to form, Hitchens takes no prisoners. Few people have the breadth of knowledge AND experience of Hitchens and he brings it all to bear on the folly we humans call religion. I read this book like it was candy. As a lifelong student of religion, I could only echo his conclusions. I read Hitchens before writing my most recent book, The God Virus: How religion infects our lives and culture. Hitchens gave me great inspiration to take the analysis a step further and explain how religion actually works in the psychological and cultural realms. I would also highly recommend his book, The Missionary Position. Rational analysis needs to be brought to bear on anyone who is held up as a model of sainthood or service. Much evil is done in the name of service and Mother Theresa is one of the larger offenders, as Hitchens so adequately documents.
5 Stars god is not Great is greater than god whom never was
As Hitchens puts in his book in the first few pages, if you're a Christian or whatever trying to counter his arguments with unjustified arguments, I don't recommend you buy this book. Don't waste your time because you have no sustainable argument – that being said, many people have tried and failed – most of them miserably.
On the other hand, if you're an atheist or an open-minded religious person, you're in for a real treat. It's extremely well written, has loads of character – while having fantastic arguments, it keeps logical explanations, but is still a joy to read. The only thing that I didn't like (which is only a preference-thing) is that it sometimes got a little too anecdotal for me. (though I'm a philosophy-guru-type, so thats that.)
If you want a taste of what this book entails, go on YouTube and type in Christopher Hitchens. Take a look at a few clips or debates. He speaks for himself very well.
5 Stars A bold and neccesary look at Religion
I enjoyed reading Hitchen's book so much because he does not dance around religion nor try to soften the blow about how bad it is, instead he puts religion in it's place and he does it with demanding language.
He also takes a look at religion at its affect on society. This is different from Dawkins book which look at religion scientifically, which is good non the less, but it is great to read a book and to be able to grasp it better. Not being a scientist and all.
Hitchens uses eloquence in his language that makes him such a great debater on his numerous tv shows and his university tour discussions. And it shows in his writing as well.
A wonderful read. Strongly recommended for people who want to learn more about the horror religion has become.

I don't agree with this book. The book is very irrational.
What is irrational about Hitchins' book? I think it's time we take a good, hard look at religion and the god it endorses.
