The Death Proclamation of Generation X A Self Fulfilling Prophesy of Goth Grunge and Heroin

Taking a hard, penetrating look at the despondent heart of darkness of the 1990s, The Death Proclamation of Generation X is a probing chronicle of America's thirteenth generation caught between the idealistic Baby Boomers and the well-financed Generation Y. Generation X was scapegoated and dismissed without the chance to prove themselves.Blending tenets of psychology, sociology, and cultural anthropology, author Maxim Furek offers a unique perspective to the post-modernist discourse by exploring the impact that personalities such as Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, River Phoenix, Marilyn Manson, and Anna Nicole Smith left on that generation. Evaluating the psychological and sociological variables of goth, grunge, and heroin, Furek weaves a dark tapestry of this unique demographic group born between 1965 and 1978.The Death Proclamation of Generation X pieces together the complexities of Generation X to acknowledge their individuality, honor their existence, and to celebrate their future. They are a group with their own identity of music, attitude, and culture. The resilience of Generation X is but another example of the power of this special collection of people-a group of highly skilled and adaptive individuals.
4 Stars Wish Maxim had written this earlier
Yes, I wish I had this most entertaining, fact-filled book available when I was vainly trying to understand what my generation x niece was all about during some difficult times. Furek has obviously done extensive research into this important demographic group and has produced a highly readable and informative book which examines the dynamic interplay between xer's music, drugs, and cultural mores. The various chapters provide a wealth of fascinating reading for anyone interested in this unique generational group and their influence on contemporary culture. A great book for the cultural anthropology student studying various demographic groups as well as the reader searching for entertainment and intellectual stimulation. Really enjoyed it!
5 Stars Wow!!! This was one wild ride!!!
Death Proclamation was one wild literary ride. A thrill a minute and my very best 2008 Christmas gift.Well written, well researched and a must read for serious grunge fans of all ages.Kurt, Layne and Andrew would be proud.
3 Stars Not bad, considering a boomer wrote it
Being part of the demographic Ive read alot about the subjeect. This one was pretty good (I always hesitate to compliment boomers, mostly because theyre so quick to compliment themselves). The author is a little clueless, talking about "grunge" fashion (theres an oxymoron for you). Also he focuses alot on heroin use, but for all his babbling on the subject he never points out the obvious-heroin is a painkiller, and it works just as well for mental pain as for physical. Overall its a fun one day read.
