The Bible Slam: Numbers Chapter 03

Once again, we are told about Aaron's two sons who God killed because they didn't do the sacrificial fire right.  Strangers who go to the sanctuary are to be put to death.  The Levites belong to Yahweh.  All firstborn sons and firstborn animals belong to Yahweh.

The chapter gets into the genealogy of the Levites and the jobs all of them are assigned for the tabernacle.

Levite and "regular" males one month old and above were counted as part of a "redemption" scheme.

Yahweh sets up a balance sheet for redemption accounting.  Sort of like a balance sheet where debits should equal assets and credits, the formula is based on:

# of Levites (Yahweh's) = # of 1st Born Israelite Males (Yahweh's)

Numbers 3 data for the balance sheet:

• # of Yahweh's Levites:  22,000 / # of 1st Born Israelite Males 22,273
• Difference = 273 "extra" first born males

Result:  5 shekels to be paid for each one of the 273 males as "redemption" money.

Discussion Points.

When it comes to polls and redemptions, women and girls are meaningless to Yahweh. And for abortion opponents, why does Numbers 3 (link to King James text) not count infants and fetuses under a year old?

Presumably, firstborn females don't count, so they do not belong to Yahweh.
