Richard A. Viguerie, who says in his press release that has been called "one of the creators of the modern conservative movement," is an active member of a parish in the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Virginia. By letters sent throughout the country, he is telling Catholics not to contribute to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development because it allegedly funds "pro-abortion and pro-homosexual organizations."
According to his press release,
Viguerie is calling on Catholics to: (1) boycott the upcoming CCHD collection at all Masses; and (2) communicate with their pastor and bishop to tell them that they will not contribute to any cause promoted by the bishops until funding is stopped of left-wing political groups.
Catholic bishops say that Viguerie's claim is untrue. Writes the Catholic News Service,
Members of the U.S. bishops' subcommittee overseeing the Catholic Campaign for Human Development reassured their fellow bishops and donors that "no group that opposes Catholic social or moral teaching is eligible for funding" from their domestic anti-poverty campaign.
Bishop Roger P. Morin of Biloxi, Miss., subcommittee chairman, stressed in a Nov. 17 report to the U.S. bishops at their fall general assembly in Baltimore that accusations CCHD is "providing funds to groups that are pro-abortion or groups that are not in support of the family … and other untruths" are "outrageous claims."
