The oldest known manuscript of the Qur'an, discovered in 1972, is being carefully preserved and reviewed. Researchers report that there are startling changes between the ancient text and the text that is used today.
The oldest known text was written approximately 70 years after the death of the Prophet. Individual words were written in a way that could have 30 different meanings, suggesting that the text was not passed down word for word.
More interesting was a discovery that there had been earlier texts that had washed off and were overwritten with minor text and chapter changes.
Islam scholars say that these written deviations are irrelevant because the integrity of the Qur'an has been protected by its strong oral tradition.
