The Christian Anti-Defamation Commission (CADC) and its supporters made a big deal about how Christians would be imprisoned for "hate speech" and "thought crimes" for preaching against homosexuality ever since the hate crimes legislation was expanded to include gays, lesbians, transgendered and bisexual people. The Christian community has been saying that the hate crimes legislation will silence churches, even though the legislation included a specific clause exempting religious speech.
CADC and others planned a big "Rally for Religious Freedom" to be held in Washington where the "sin of homosexuality" sermons would be given. CADC's Gary Cass begged his supporters for money for the event last Monday:
I am more than willing to go and even risk arrest, but I can't do it without your prayers and financial support. If we don't make a stand now, this will be the beginning of a tragic loss of liberty. Our children and grandchildren will suffer that loss most. Help me preserve the blessings of liberty for the next generation.
CADC, Rick Scarborough, Janet Porter and others showed up for their rally yesterday — perhaps with the hopes of getting arrested to prove their point — and nothing happened.
According to Right Wing Watch, the group did not read passages from the Bible condemning gays, nor did they read the verses about putting gays to death. Apparently, more gays and counter-protesters showed up to the "rally" than Christians and they didn't feel comfortable telling the crowd that they should be killed.
