Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus How the Jewishness of Jesus Can Transform Your Faith

Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus takes readers on a fascinating journey, helping them discover how learning about the Jewish world of Jesus can enrich their own faith. By exploring the land, culture, customs, prayers, and feasts, Ann Spangler and Lois Tverberg help readers to perceive Jesus through the eyes and ears of first-century Jews.
4 Stars For Christians who are interested in teh Jewishness of Yeshua
This was a really very good read. I found the book: Helpful, encouraging, easy to read and though provoking. It presents much foundational information about Judaism and how that informed an understanding of the Messiah, and the Judaic foundations of Christianity. I found it quite inspiring.
5 Stars Jonathan Gainey [...]
This book is full of "ahha" moments for the reader. Of the many books that I have read on the culture of Jesus and the first-century world in which he lived, Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus is among my very favorites. It is a book that can be read by and shared with anyone who is seeking more knowledge about the words of the Bible, whether a new biblical reader or a seasoned scholar.
I quickly found that it is difficult to put the book down, as the pages are full of wonderful life-touching insights. I have already bought and given away twenty-five copies to people who I know will benefit from its teachings and benefit others from what they have learned.
I really hope that more people will have the opportunity to enjoy and grow from the research of Spangler and Tverberg, as their research sholarship is a valuable asset to all who are privileged to read the pages of this wonderful book.
1 Star location, location, location…it's everything.
this book is misplaced in the judaism section. it is clearly christian subject matter. it's location makes me wonder if any proselytizing is intended.
4 Stars Rich Biblical & Historical Insight
If you are looking for a book that will give you an intrinsic and insightful look into the life of Jesus Christ, "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus", by Ann Spangler and Lois Tverberg should be foremost on your reading list. The description on the front cover of the book, "How the Jewishness of Jesus Can Transform Your Faith", is very accurate, as the book paints a vivid picture of the life and times of the most important person in history. The publisher is Zondervan, with an original publication date of March 2009. The jacketed hardcover ISBN number is 978-0-310-28422-2. The topic label is RELIGION: Christian Life/ Spiritual Growth, and for $21.99 USD you definitely get more than enough learning to help you achieve a more satisfying spiritual experience.
The first words of the book immediately bring you into an average day with Jesus. Ann Spangler does an excellent job of painting a picture of what life must have been like in Galilee during the first century. The authors tell the readers the objective of the book within the first few pages: to help readers develop their faith and relationship with Jesus by getting on his level, and walking in his shoes. Spangler and Tverberg both agree much of the reason the Bible seems so out of touch with today's society is people simply cannot fathom what life was like in Jesus' time. They provide rich descriptions of their own walks of faith. Ann uses her trip to Jerusalem as the backdrop for her own experiences that lead to her to desire to know Jesus more intimately.
Lacking a slew of convoluted jargon, the authors bespeak their experiences and realizations in a plain, understandable language, although sometimes it is difficult to tell where one author stops and the other picks up. Otherwise, the narrative voice is mostly that of Ann Spangler. On the whole, the casual tone of the narration provides an enjoyable read, yet does not come across as too elementary for the the serious Bible student.
The book is a wealth of interesting facts, sure to enlighten even those who have a strong background in Biblical studies. As mentioned before, Ann's vibrant descriptions of Jesus' homeland are invaluable for providing a picture for the reader. Both the women provide personal anecdotes about revelations they both had in their studies for this book. The reader is as delighted as the writer when she shares those moments of clarity. It makes Bible study all the more enticing for the reader to realize this new-found knowledge propagates itself, and continues to grow. Tverberg and Spangler are correct when they tell the reader this book will open their eyes to new depths of study that await them.
5 Stars Reclining at the Lord's feet, loving every minute
One of the more inspirational books that I have read recently is "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus." Incorporating Jewish terms (and their definitions) throughout, the two female authors open up new horizons as they consider the Hebrew background of our Lord and Savior. There were a number of "aha" moments for me—and I'm a full-time Bible teacher and seminary graduate. For example, the idea that the word "torah" in Jewish Bibles is usually translated "teaching," yet in our Protestant Bibles, it is translated "law." When we read Psalm 1:2, for instance, we see how the righteous person meditates on "his law day and night." While there is nothing wrong with the Law—after all, it's understanding the Law that leads us to the Cross when we realize we're not good enough to earn God's righteousness—it's encouraging to realize that meditating on all of God's teachings is commanded. It's a small nuance, something I will think more about, but this idea will stick to me for the rest of my days.
With so many references made to places in Israel, I highly recommend this book for those who have either traveled to the Holy Land or are about to do so. Each chapter is full of morsels that, I think, would have an impact on any trip. In fact, I just came back from the Holy Land (April 2009) and could almost smell the wind on the Sea of Galilee as it was described. It made very exciting reading for me, each chapter unique and flavorful in its own way. For those who enjoy learning more about Jesus from a different perspective, I can't highly recommend this book enough.
