Marine Accused of Attacking Priest with Deadly Weapon
Tampa police say that a Marine attacked a priest with a deadly weapon. The Marine was sent to jail and the priest to the hospital.
The priest, Rev. Father Alexios Marakis, says he got lost in Tampa and stopped at a parking garage at an apartment complex to get directions. The Greek priest served at a cathedral at Tarpon Springs and was not proficient in English. He says that the Marine hit him over the head with a tire iron and then chased him out of the garage.
The Marine, Lance Corporal Jason Bruce, called 911, saying that he was holding an Arabic terrorist.
Bruce's attorney says that the priest, who showed up as a bearded man wearing sandals, made a sexual advance toward Bruce and that he shouted in Arabic. The attorney says that Bruce acted in self defense, thinking that the man was a terrorist who was going to rob him.
Bruce has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
