The Bible Slam: Leviticus Chapter 18

This is one of the favorite chapters of the evangelical right for purposes of condemning homosexuals (see discussion below regarding translations).   In this chapter, we are told that homosexuality is an abomination, bestiality is confusing, you're not to profane the name of God and children are not to be sacrificed in the fire of Molech.

Fourteen verses are devoted to who you're not allowed to look at when they're naked.   Men are not to go anywhere near menstruating women.

All of these things shall "defile" the land and the soul that does them shall be cut off from his people.

Discussion Points.

Among the many "nakedness" instructions, various relationships with in-laws are condemned; however these types of relations are all over in the Old Testament, such as Lot's daughters raping him and, ironically, Aaron and Moses being the offspring of Amram and his aunt.

Who is Molech?

Leviticus 18:21 (King James) reads:

18:21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

As a god, Molech is depicted as an owl, but the term is also associated with child sacrifices.   The Jewish Encyclopedia indicates that the Israelites may have sacrificed children to appease Yahweh.

Leviticus 18:22 is used to condemn homosexuality and is frequently brought up in the marriage quality debate:

18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

There are some that say that the King James and other translations are out of context.

The Top 10 Reasons Why The Bible is Repulsive.

The endless sacrifices and blood splashing so far in this book of Leviticus is nauseating.   But there's more that makes the stories and commands of the Bible disgusting to intellectual people in modern-day society.

In the "culture wars," evangelicals tend to pick and chose the verses that justify their biases and ignore other Biblical laws that apply to them.   The following video explores ten deplorable Biblical commands — including killing homosexuals — and raises the question, if the Bible really means what it says, then why pick and choose?   The American government has absolutely nothing to do with the Ten Commandments and the Bible.     (Editor's note – some images will be disturbing, so watch at your own risk).
