The Quran Oxford Worlds Classics

The Quran Oxford Worlds Classics

One of the most influential books in the history of literature, recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, the Qur'an is the supreme authority and living source of all Islamic teaching, the sacred text that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of Islam. Yet despite the growing interest in Islamic teachings and culture, there has never been a truly satisfactory English translation of the Qur'an, until now.
This superb new translation of the Qur'an is written in contemporary language that remains faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original, making the text crystal clear while retaining all of this great work's eloquence. The translation is accurate and completely free from the archaisms, incoherence, and alien structures that mar existing translations. Thus, for the first time, English-speaking readers will have a text of the Qur'an which is easy to use and comprehensible. Furthermore, Haleem includes notes that explain geographical, historical, and personal allusions as well as an index in which Qur'anic material is arranged into topics for easy reference. His introduction traces the history of the Qur'an, examines its structure and stylistic features, and considers issues related to militancy, intolerance, and the subjection of women.
Clearly written and filled with helpful information and guidance, this brilliant translation of the Qur'an is the best available introduction to the faith of Moslems around the world.
About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars My Quran exposure
Not being a Muslim it has been an enlightening opportunity to be able to read into Islam's mind and soul.

5 Stars Best Translation I've Read
This is a very good translation for the new generation of Muslims living in the West. The Quran finally made me cry because I understood it.

5 Stars Solid
It is a very good translation into the English language, which I have repeatedly ordered for my students. The language is accessible, and the passages are formatted into paragraphs.

One major gripe I have, however, regards the translator's excessive use of exclamation points. It might sound like nitpicking, but you'll understand when you read it.

I don't yet regard this translation as the perfect translation for an American audience, but it is as solid as anything else out there thus far. Thus, I give it the 5 stars.

5 Stars the real Quran
I bought this copy to read about the seventy-two virgins that a Muslim gets when he blows himself and someone else up. And the requirement that a Muslim kill at least five infidels a day in order to make it to Paradise.

5 Stars Non-Muslim reviews Qu'ran
As a hospital chaplain I encounter persons of many faith traditions. I feel it is important in my work to be well-rounded and to have some knowledge of all major faiths. I provide this caveat, so that you will know I am not an expert on Islamic faith.

I selected this translation: The Qur'an (Oxford World's Classics) because it is well written in modern English and easy to understand. I have also found M.A.S. Abdel Haleem's commentaries very helpful. He notes opposing views and histories for the Qur'an as a whole and also for many verses.
