The Bible Slam: Leviticus Chapter 13

The Bible Slam: Leviticus Chapter 13

This chapter details various skin conditions, such as rashes, open sores, leprosy, baldness and so on.   All medical conditions are diagnosed by the priests.   People who are ill are declared to be "unclean."

Priests are also to inspect clothing and fabrics and declare whether they are clean or unclean.

Discussion Points.

This chapter is interesting from a historical perspective, but truly cannot be applicable with today's knowledge that came from science, not Yahweh.   According to Leviticus 13, God said to treat people suffering from leprosy as follows:

13:44 He is a leprous man, he is unclean: the priest shall pronounce him utterly unclean; his plague is in his head.

13:45 And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.

13:46 All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.

For those who claim that the Bible is the inerrent word of God and that it must be obeyed, are they willing to toss out the advances of medical science and live in the way described in this chapter? Is calling a person unclean and kicking him out of society to live in solitude a moral compass we must continue to abide by? Perhaps in those days, this was the only solution, but this chapter clearly points out that the Bible does not apply to modern man. If it applies, then people suffering from illness should first consult their priests if they are ill, not a doctor.
