The Popular Vote Results for Marriage, Domestic Partnerships and Human Rights

The marriage equality bill enacted by Maine's legislature was repealed by popular vote last night, with 53% of voters rejecting the law,. This is the first time that a legislative law granting same sex marriages was repealed.     31 states that have voted on marriage equality have all rejected it in the popular vote.

In the state of Washington, Referendum 71 — dubbed the "everything but marriage" — domestic partnership law that extends marriage benefits to homosexual relationships and heterosexual relationships between senior citizens who choose not to marry appears to be winning with a 51% majority.   However, only about half of the precincts have reported and observers say that the vote is too close to call.

In Kalamazoo, voters approved of an ordinance that would make it illegal to discriminate against gay, lesbian and transgendered individuals in the areas of hiring, housing and public accommodation.

Activist Cleve Jones explains to Rachel Maddow why homosexual people will always be considered second class citizens in America unless there is federal action.
