In Iraq, women have a hard time doing business because of their cultural beliefs. For example, they may feel embarrassed in the company of men.
Babylon Bank is dealing with this problem head on. It opened a women's only branch in the holy town of Najaf. Its 25-member staff is entirely female, and it only accepts women clients. The only men are the ones standing guard outside the building.
50 women signed up within the first week the bank was open. The branch, which is the first of its kind, expects at least 200 women to sign up within the year.
The holy status of the city attracts pilgrims from across the nation and as a result, is becoming a commercial hub. If its all-women bank branch does well, similar branches will be opened throughout Iraq.
