Like the previous chapters in this book, this one is devoted to animal sacrifices. There are "atonement" sacrifices for sinners, including individuals and the entire congregation of Israelites who sin out of ignorance.
The sacrifices involve special attention to the head, fat, liver, kidneys and dung of the bulls being slaughtered. Some involve the priests having to dip their fingers in blood and then sprinkle it seven times before the Lord.
The translation that Chelev is reading from indicates that if a high priest sins, the entire community is responsible for the sin. According to the King James version of Leviticus 4, however, this is not so clear. For instance,
4:3 If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.
Despite this difference in translations, these ceremonies are disgusting by today's standards.
Here is a Muslim's interpretation of sacrifices for sin, and the role of Jesus' crucifixion. Judging from the spelling, English may not be his native tongue, but the point he is making is interesting.
