Portland, Maine's Press Herald reported in August 2009 that the Catholic Church was facing difficult decisions. Due to the falling numbers of priests and parishioners, coupled with rising costs, the church decided to close down some of its churches. The Bangor Daily News set the number of church closures at five. Both news sources said that donations were falling 10% per year.
Despite these financial hardships, the AP reports that the Catholic Church has donated over $550,000 to the anti-marriage equality campaign, Question 1, with Maine sources coming from a "rainy day fund." Of the donations, approximately $214,000 came from bishops and dioceses outside of the state of Maine.
