Jon O'Brien of Catholics for Choice discusses his organization's recent survey that shows strong support among Catholic laity for access to basic reproductive health services condemned by the Catholic hierarchy. The survey also shows that Catholics support health insurance reform.
The conservative worldview pushed by the hierarchy of the Catholic church is not what the ordinary members believe. For example, unlike the Pope and other conservative spokespeople, the membership does not believe that the use of condoms is wrong. An overwhelming majority support the idea of private or government health insurance coverage for women who might need an abortion, particularly in instances of rape, incest, or when the mother's health is jeopardized. Catholic voters are not in favor of Catholic hospitals refusing services based on "conscience clauses" when they are taking U.S. taxpayer money.
