This chapter has detailed instructions that God gave Moses about constructing the Ark of the Covenant. The instructions call for the use of pure gold, special cloths, various woods and so on. Buds and branches, cherubims and other ornaments are described.
Considering that previous chapters described the Israelites as a nomadic group of people who were wandering about the desert for 40 years and who had recently escaped slavery, it is difficult to believe that they had the amount of gold and craftsmanship available for the Ark of the Covenants that is described in this chapter. Additionally, as pointed out in the Skeptics Annotated version of the King James' Exodus Chapter 25, it is odd that God instructs Moses to place cherubims on this ark when God had previously said that no graven images were allowed.
It is likely that the writers of the Old Testament stole the Ark of the Covenant idea from Egypt and that the nomadic Israelites never had such a structure.
