Conservative Christians believe there is a war on the Christian holy day of Christmas being waged by worldly progressives. It now appears their concerns have grown to include a war on Easter. Recently Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly warned his listeners that there is a war on the Christian holy day of Easter, too.
What O'Reilly and the other Christians have sadly overlooked is the war on the Bible's Easter zombies. The Bible Easter zombies can teach us much. These Bible characters are too often overlooked and ignored not only by the progressives but also by Christians themselves. When's the last time you heard a good Christian sermon focused on the Bible zombies??? Have you ever seen a movie or television show about them??? There's a conspiracy of silence about the Bible's Easter zombies!
To break through the wall of silence and to learn about the Bible's Easter zombies/living dead open the Gospel of Matthew to 27:50-53. There we find the gospel story of people who were dead and buried in graveyards surrounding Jerusalem but who, at the exact time Jesus is said to have died on the cross, came back to life and came out of their graves. The Gospel of Matthew tells us that they hung-out in the graveyards from that Friday until Sunday morning when Jesus himself is said to have come back to life and left his grave/tomb. At the time Jesus reanimated, the living dead aka Bible Easter zombies, "went into the holy city, and appeared unto many." Whoever the author of Matthew is doesn't specify how they traveled into Jerusalem/"the holy city." They may have just walked or perhaps they levitated or floated into Jerusalem. When you throw away your innate God-given reason anything is possible!
The American founder and Deist Thomas Paine covered this Bible claim of the living dead in his landmark book on God, Deism and religion, The Age of Reason, The Complete Edition (for Kindle version click here). Some of what Paine wrote on this topic is, "It is an easy thing to tell a lie, but it is difficult to support the lie after it is told. The writer of the book of Matthew should have told us who the saints were that came to life again, and went into the city, and what became of them afterward, and who it was that saw them – for he is not hardy enough to say he saw them himself; whether they came out naked, and all in natural buff, he-saints and she-saints; or whether they came full dressed, and where they got their dresses; whether they went to their former habitations, and reclaimed their wives, their husbands, and their property, and how they were received; whether they entered ejectments for the recovery of their possessions, or brought actions of crim. con. against the rival interlopers; whether they remained on earth, and followed their former occupation of preaching or working; or whether they died again, or went back to their graves alive, and buried themselves."
We can learn a lot from the Bible's Easter zombies. The first apparent lesson they teach us is that the Bible is NOT the word of God. When we compare the order and beauty of Nature and the Universe with this Bible story of Easter zombies we realize the author of the former could not possibly be the author of the latter. We know we have and can enjoy our innate God-given reason if we so decide and that anything which our gift from God of innate reason rejects cannot be from God who gave us reason.
Deism teaches the only possible "word of God" is the Creation and Universe itself. To quote again from Thomas Paine's outstanding book The Age of Reason, The Complete Edition, "I believe it is only in the CREATION that all our ideas and conceptions of a Word of God can unite. The Creation speaks a universal language, independently of human speech or human language, multiplied and various as they may be. It is an ever existing original, which every man can read. It cannot be forged; it cannot be counterfeited; it cannot be lost; it cannot be altered; it cannot be suppressed. It does not depend upon the will of man whether it shall be published or not; it publishes itself from one end of the earth to the other. It preaches to all nations and to all worlds; and this Word of God reveals to man all that is necessary for man to know of God."
It's time to allow our innate God-given reason and Deism to move us out of the ancient superstitions which promote fear based religious violence and misery (to see how Deism has profoundly helped many people formerly mired in "revealed"/hearsay religion visit our "Why Deism?" page) and move us on to create a world free of such nonsense – a world grounded in reason, true progress and happiness – a world we can create!
