It was discovered and widely reported on the Internet last year that Fox Nation, in an article in December about Newtown and the Patriot Guard Riders, which described Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church as a Democrat, and Westboro Baptist Church itself as left-wing, are to this day hardly being challenged by commenters on the Fox News site, nor has Fox Nation corrected the article, or fact checked it despite attention being called to its inaccuracies. This issue was brought to light today by MoveOn.org on their Facebook page.
Westboro Baptist Church is an independent evangelical Baptist right wing hate group who is known for their God Hates Fags stance and for protesting at military funerals. When it was discovered they were planning to protest in Newtown, CT, Patriot Guard Riders who are of all political affiliations, travelled there to protect the family of Dawn Hochsprung, the principal who threw herself in front of the shooter trying to protect the children. GodDiscussion reported, along with other cited news sources, that Westboro Baptist Church did not leave their hotel rooms, and thus, along with Fred Phelps, never showed up to protest at Newtown. Patriot Guard Riders are made up of all political leanings, according to their site:
The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.
We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.
The fact that FoxNews has yet to fix this piece is disturbing for professional journalism. As for Fred Phelps, they told half the truth. Fred Phelps was a Democrat and according to Shirley Phelps-Roper herself, who we interviewed in 2010 on the GodDiscussion Radio Show on BlogTalk Radio, still self-identified at that time as Democrat, even though his party has moved on ideologically from him. Then he broke with the Democrat party during the 1992 presidential elections because Democrats chose to embrace gay people. Republicans are on record as being against homosexuality. White evangelicals (especially young evangelicals) make up 82% of the Republican votes in this nation according to a recent Pew Forum study.
