Timbuktu teen receives 60 lashes for speaking to men on the street

A teen aged girl approximately 15-years-old has reportedly received 60 lashes this week in Timbuktu after being convicted by Islamist extremists of speaking to men on the street. According to reports by the Seattle Times and other news outlets, the girl was caught  by the Islamists of Ansar Dine while standing next to males.  The group runs Timbuktu.

A resident of Timbuktu named Ousmane Maiga was contacted by phone, and stated,

“The Islamists charged that the girl was warned five times by Islamist police but she continued to speak to men in the street. After the hearing, the Islamists gave 60 lashes to the girl. The population did not turn out in large numbers to attend this flogging.”

The flogging occurred around 11 a.m. local time, and was carried out  in front of the Islamic police headquarters, in downtown Timbuktu. Ironically, police headquarters is located next to Independence Square.
