Rachel Maddow debunked the latest accusations by Republicans and then launched into a review of a poll taken in New Jersey, where conservatives were asked whether they thought that President Obama was the anti-christ. Amazingly, 18% said "yes" and another 17% said that they weren't sure. That means that 35% — or more than one in three conservatives in New Jersey — think that Obama might be the anti-christ.
Maddow had former fundamentalist Christian leader Frank Schaeffer on as a guest to talk about this issue. Schaeffer said that when he was a child, his mother believed that President Kennedy would resurrect. According to her scriptural beliefs, the fact that he died of a wound to the head meant that he would resurrect as the anti-christ.
Schaeffer said that the evangelical culture has rotted the brains of the United States. Fundamentalist Christians distrust facts, believing in things such as a young earth where dinosaurs cavorted with humans and that all news relates to the end times. This is a culture where good news is bad news because bad things fuel their hope that Christ is about to return and that the end times are here.
"The village cannot reorganize to serve the village idiot." Frank Schaeffer
As a former lifelong Republican, Schaeffer said that the GOP needs to stop catering to the village idiot. The village idiot, in the case of the Republican party, is fundamentalist Christianity.
Schaeffer is a churchgoer. He does not subscribe, however, to the fundamentalist version of Christianity that rejects facts. He wonders if Christianity can be rescued from the Christians.
