Femen, Ukrainian topless feminist activist group, chainsaws a memorial crucifix in protest of Pussy Riot’s conviction

The leader of the Ukrainian feminist activist group, called Femen, took a chainsaw to a memorial crucifix, and sawed it down in protest of Pussy Riot’s conviction.  For them, it was a show of solidarity.

Their action was not the first protest.  Such protests have sprung up around the world according to Russia Today and Huffington Post since three members of the group Pussy Riot received two years in prison as their sentence for protesting against Putin in an Orthodox church for hooliganism.  Supporters of Pussy Riot in London, New York, Brazil, Australia, and other countries rally in protest of the judge’s ruling and some even gather at Russian embassies to protest, according to Russia Today.

Forty people Marched from the Russian Consulate in Upper Manhattan and to Times Square in New York City as a solidarity protest.

Police arrested six people in New York for wearing a mask while marching in protest to the Russian Consulate in Manhattan.  In Sao Paulo, Brazil, police dragged three protesting women from the Russian Consulate.

Police in the Ukraine launched an investigation into the fallen crucifix, which once stood on Independence Hill above Kiev Square.

The feminist movement who recorded and took photos of the act of vandalism said it was a sign of solidarity for “the victims of a medieval witch hunt.”

“We want to show the authorities that no imbecile has the right to trample on freedom of speech and the rights of women and shut them [Pussy Riot] away in jail,” said a spokeswoman from the movement.

The symbolic felling of the cross has been dubbed as a “Trash Prayer,” inspired by Pussy Riot’s iconic “Punk Prayer.”

Femen said the “Trash Prayer” was a “warning” to President Putin and Patriarch Kirill that Femen would come after “the jerks responsible for their [Pussy Riot’s] suffering with a chainsaw.”

The far right, All-Ukrainian union vowed to rebuild the cross, which was a memorial of the victims of political oppression under Stalin’s rule.

"Today's act of vandalism against the memory of victims of political repression showed that nonhumans have crossed the line and set themselves against the whole Ukrainian community, as almost every Ukrainian family was repressed by the communist regime,"  the party’s deputy head Andrey Mohnik said.

The Crucifix was four meters high and Femen sawed it down as the judge sentenced the three members of Pussy Riot.  According to Huffington Post, “Inna Shevchenko, 22, told RBK News she tore down the symbol in support of the members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot.”  Two others used ropes to direct the cross’ fall to the ground.

"No business, not even one as successful as the church, has the right to attack women's rights," Shevchenko, 22, a veteran of several Femen protests, said after bringing down the cross.

Ukraine police opened a “hooligan case” in connection to the sawing down of the crucifix, according to Reuters. The maximum sentence is four years.

Before sawing down the tree, Shevchenko, with “Free Riot” written across her bare chest, crossed herself Orthodox-style.  Afterwards, she posed for a camera, with a bare chest and her arms spread wide.

*claps hands* Good show, Bare Naked Ladies! Oops! Wrong group. lol

"The victims of a medieval witch hunt" is indeed true, since the Pussy Riot singers' computers were gone through for evidence that their "hooliganism" was "motivated by religious hatred and emnity." There are plenty of critics of the Russian Orthodox Church's cozy relationship with Putin, and I suspect that the Femen demonstration is just the start of a larger wave of protests to come.

The protest have already started, just not to the degree of Femen's protest

Somebody should have SHOT this tramp; it would have been justified!

    • http://www.houseofbetazed.com Mriana

Why? What did she do that was so bad as to harm her? She didn't harm a human or another animal. All she did was chop down a dead tree, which someone else killed.

      You are a complete asshole!

    • Peter

And she is a "tramp" because? What's wrong with breasts. Your mythical Eve had them and art through the ages depicts her as topless. So she was a "tramp" according to your mindset. I'm glad you don't live in Ontario where it is legal to go topless. Gee, all those Canadian tramps, how will society survive?

      • http://www.houseofbetazed.com Mriana

Eve is also bottomless in some of that artwork too. She is often depicted as being naked.

        • Peter

Adam too, but with strategically placed pieces of vegetation. Hope it wasn't poison ivy.

lol Now that would be "natural birth control".

Can the anti-Christ be a female????? I wish she had cut her leg off

    • http://www.houseofbetazed.com Mriana

Again, what did she do that was so bad that warranted physical harm to her? She did no one harm. What she did do was property damage, maybe vandalism, but that is not so bad as to warrant her bodily harm.

Christ, I hope those kids aren't yours.

  • Strategos

This act of vandalism shows nothing but hatred for the church and victims of 70 years of communist oppression. Why didn't she protest at the Russian embassy instead? Why destroy something that is not hers, and in such a hateful manner?

    • http://www.houseofbetazed.com Mriana

I don't think it was hate. I think it was anger, angry rage to be exact, mixed with a lot of pain, because in her mind, from what I gather from what all I read about the story, she feels oppression is starting to happen all over again, with the Church's backing and encouragement. If she's right, that monument means nothing. She sees Putin and the Church oppressing women and she's right, at least about the Church oppressing women. Xianity, can and often does oppress women. When you mix religion with government, even in cases such as Pussy Riot, what often happens is oppression of people, including and esp women. What intelligent thinking woman would not be angry about that? So what if she hates the Church? That monument will not matter if Femen and Pussy Riot are right (Putin and the Church oppressing women [and others] together), it will be just a meaningless piece of wood, a meaningless monument, and Russia will be ran by an oppressive Theocracy, as bad as Communism.

If people would listen to young adults, they might hear what they are saying or at least get an idea of what they are saying.

It is with disgust with the human race that I read the comments that vilify members of Femen as 'nonhumans' and calling for them to be shot, or other violence to be inflicted upon them. Have Christian's really denounced their saviours own words so easily. The people who have voiced such vile notions should be ashamed of their words and recognize within themselves the failure they exhibit to the world. They do a great disservice to their faith. Shame on Jesus, for failing.

  • Rockin' Rasputin

OK, you chainsaw a monument cross erected to honor the millions of victims murdered/starved to death by Stalin in Ukraine to protest Putin and the Russian courts? Shame on Jesus? Where the hell did you people come from to condone this act of utterly pure stupidity? It is mindless hooliganism at its worst, without bringing any religion into the argument. Lock 'em up and throw away the key just for being idiots.

    • http://www.houseofbetazed.com Mriana

I don't think you get it. It has nothing to do with Jesus or shame on the character, but rather the Church and Putin. How else do you get back at a church that is siding with a man like Putin? They aren't idiots at all, but very much thinking people.

Hi I just wanted to let the author know that the country is called Ukraine, not "the" Ukraine. Putting "the" in front of the country Ukraine is INCORRECT. It would be like saying "THE" Germany, "THE" France, etc.
