This Week On God Discussion Radio: Science, Reason and Superstition with Dr. Liz Cornwell, The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, and other special guests

This week on the God Discussion Show, we'll be talking about science, reason and superstition, as well as separation of church and state activism. From Richard Dawkins' book, The Greatest Show on Earth – The Evidence for Evolution, we learn that "in 2008, a Gallup poll showed that 44% of Americans believed God had created [...]

A "useful" tail…

I read this article (A Good Read: America's De Facto Religious Test of Office) on God Discussion today and this quote attributed to Seneca the Younger jumped into my mind almost immediately. "Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful" I think that this [...]

Prop 8 and the Separation of Church and State … or Emotional Opinions vs. Facts

The religious right and social conservatives are furious over Judge Vaughn Walker's decision that overturned Proposition 8, the gay marriage ban in California.  Proponents of Proposition 8 have already filed their appeal with the 9th Circuit. Pam's House Blend and Right Wing Watch have extensive lists of quotes and press releases from the religious right.  [...]

Why God? An Examination of Why People Believe

Except from Why God?  Link to full article below… Humanity’s search for an explanation of the origins of the universe, and of life itself, has led to the creation of elaborate belief systems that center on a mystical, supreme force binding all things together. God has been imagined as many things over time. The concept [...]

Kicking God Out of the Bedroom

A trend I am seeing in reporting religious news is a push for huge families, such as with the Quiverfull movement.  This push is taking place in political, social and religious arguments.  The huge family concept is mixed with biblical patriarchy that demands that "God is in charge of the womb" and claiming that huge [...]

Dr. Louis Turi: Don’t Cast Swine Before Pearl

Dr. Turi shares some astrological predictions, discusses the Church of England's decision to allow women to serve as clergy, talks about Sheriff Joe Arpaio's chart and shares some other information.

The Christian Right's Rising Method of Attack: Viewpoint Discrimination

Charges of "viewpoint discrimination" are, in my opinion, going to become an increasing vehicle employed by the Christian right to challenge separation of church and state. What is viewpoint discrimination?  Basically, for the purposes of this discussion, it's an argument that religious opinion is being discriminated against, whether in the workplace, in public prayer, in [...]

Dr. Turi: Jesus and UFO's

Dr.Turi discusses poverty in America and Christian teachings on living lives of destitution. He examines the hypocrisy of religion and particular, the wealthy Catholic church.

The Bible Slam: Deuteronomy Chapter 13 – The Old Testament Warns Against Christianity

Deuteronomy 13 calls into question the New Testament and its god.  This chapter illustrates the problem with declaring "revealed texts" to be the "inerrant" word of a god.  It is illogical to claim that a book is inspired by a deity and without error … and then to ignore the parts that aren't liked or [...]

The Medieval Witchhunts-Why Men are Afraid of Women

The tendency of society to target women on accusations of witchcraft is not unique to the Europeans caught in the craze of the European witch-hunts. It appears to be a universal phenomenon.
The paranoid suspicion of womanhood associated with the traditional conception of the woman as malicious temptress, and embodiment of the grosser aspects of metaphysical realities, in traditional thought systems, finds convenient vent in the person of the elderly lady. Indeed, in many cultures, it would seem that a woman qualifies automatically for witch-hood once she has over stayed her welcome in a feat of longevity. The slurring expression "old witch," especially by a young woman to her mother-in-law, is an almost universal one.

The power of religion in literature

There is power in stories. The power of stories have always been known by indigenous cultures–they are the record, compiled over hundreds or even thousands of years, regarding how a culture comes to be, from creation stories to how certain things in life come to be. Living on a Sioux reservation for the last year, I have come to be even more aware of the power of story in reclaiming a culture taken over by white European settlement and Christianization. Being Irish, I also am aware of the power of Irish literature that I believe was pivotal in the freeing of the Republic of Ireland from British domination. I believe Story has been a key part for Native America being able to retain (sometimes by their fingernails), as much of their culture as they have.

Sir Isaac Newton the Occultist

Evidence which began coming to light in the middle of the last century shows that even though the world had known Sir Isaac Newton, first and foremost as a physicist who made revolutionary contributions in several fields of the discipline, Newton actually spent the overwhelmingly greater part of his life researching into the occult, especially in the field of Alchemy and biblical apocalyptic prophecies interpretation.

The Streaming Journey of Beliefs

Thoughts are energy. Just like the invisible field which surrounds our physical bodies is simply an extension of the visible us, so too are our thoughts. They stream through the ether of collective consciousness and when they find an energy stream that feels good, they follow that stream.

The Mythosphere – A compelling look at Biblical plagiarism of ancient mythologies

Modern scholars of myth turn to primitive societies to understand the roots of ancient stories.  Our culture is handed down from ancient societies, and still has remnants of their outdated religious, political, and legal systems. ChelevSaRa's powerful Mythosphere series demonstrates and explains where our concepts of "God" have been extrapolated from,  the evolution of those [...]

Reclaiming Everything for Christ – from Nations to Science Fiction

The People for the American Way's Right Wing Watch wrote about the morphing of "Reclaiming Oklahoma for Christ" into "Reclaiming America for Christ," which used to be a project of James Kennedy and Coral Ridge Ministries.  The group is planning a big shindig in July, slated as a "two day conference/Tea Party" featuring the likes [...]

Blaming It On Chocolate Jesus

On Saturday, September 4, I didn't post a thing on God Discussion. And it's Chocolate Jesus' fault. Actually, that's not quite true.  It's because of Thomas Quinn's new book, What Do You Do With A Chocolate Jesus?  An Irreverent History of Christianity.  Tom sent a review copy to me to read before our upcoming God [...]

Christian Broadcasting Network Warns that 'Islamization of France' is a Warning to the West

The Christian Broadcasting Network continues on its mission to spread Islamaphobia, claiming that "the growing Islamization of France" should serve as a warning to the west. Videos and images captured by hidden camera "demonstrate" that worshipers of Islam are given more privileges than Christians.  Among the images are Muslims worshiping in a public street, where [...]

Religion as the Devil's Tool

Writing as a guest for the Washington Post, Martha Woodroof asks if organized religion has run its course. The "devil" as used in the context of her opinion piece, is a way of thinking and decision making, not an actual entity. She notes that, As far as I can tell from the outside, people involve [...]

The UK's Telegraph is reporting this morning that the Catholic Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh is complaining that the British Broadcasting Corporation is biased toward Christianity in general and in particular, biased against Catholicism.  According to the Telegraph, "Cardinal Keith O’Brien said the BBC’s news coverage is contaminated by 'a radically secular and socially [...]
